    State Library of Queensland

Creating Curious Creatures & sparking the imagination. When we were approached to create a new visual identity for SLQ’s Summer Reading Club, we couldn’t have been more curious! Putting pen to paper, we developed a suite of characters that would appeal to school-aged kids and resonate with the program’s 2018 theme.

    About

    Background

The State Library of Queensland’s Summer Reading Club is a literature and arts program for school kids. Running through the holidays, the program gives young people the opportunity to engage with their local library, discover new books and skills, and enjoy activities that inspire a love of reading.

In 2018, the program’s theme was Curious Creatures. Our task was to create a visual identity that reflected this concept, created a connection with the Australian landscape and sparked a sense of curiosity in young readers.

    Meet our Curious Creatures

Inspired by creatures both real and imagined, we created a suite of inquisitive characters. Inclusiveness was a key consideration, and the characters were designed with anthropomorphic traits to appeal to a diverse youth audience.

In addition to character design, we developed a typeface and a number of illustrative elements that were used across a range of printed and digital campaign materials.
